2010 Western Australian Barista Championship
How quickly a year rolls around. It seems as though one minute Mark was celebrating his title as WA Barista Champion, and all too quickly, he’s set to defend it! That’s right; it’s time for the coffee industry’s glamour event of the year, the 2010 Western Australian Barista Championship.
The Barista Championship is the premier coffee making competition on the competitive circuit. It gathers together the best coffee makers in the state to battle it out for the title of best barista in WA. It’s a tough competition; baristas must make a series of four espressos, four cappuccinos and four signature drinks of their own creation, using only raw ingredients. Competitors are assessed by a panel of judges — four sensory judges who assess the taste of the drinks, two technical judges who look at technical proficiency and one head judge.
Not only does the winner win the coveted WA Barista Champion title, but he or she earns the right to represent WA in the Australian Barista Championship in Brisbane early next year. The winner of the national competition goes on to represent Australia in the World Barista Championship in London in June 2010.
The event is a great opportunity for baristas to show off their talent and ability behind the coffee machine, and also allows coffee enthusiasts and café suppliers to gather in one place at one time in order to constantly improve the espresso coffee industry.
The event has always had a great following in Perth’s coffee drinking community, since the inaugural event in 2006. Well known Perth foodie Matt, of abstractgourmet.com fame, is the point man for this year’s project. You can easily follow developments in the competition at his website. The Championship is scheduled to take place on 7 and 8 November at the Mount Hawthorn Community Hall.
Entry forms and details can easily be found on the Australasian Specialty Coffee website at www.aasca.com
